FY2026 HMDP VISITING EXPERT IN DEVELOPMENTS ON KIDNEY CANCER – PROF AXEL BEX

Prof Axel Bex is the Ministry’s HMDP Visiting Expert in Developments on Kidney Cancer. His HMDP Programme is scheduled for 23 September 2026 to 29 September 2026.
Professor Axel Bex is a urologic surgeon and Chair of the Department of Urology at Amsterdam University Medical Center. From 2019 to 2026, he served as Clinical Lead of the Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. He is also affiliated with the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam and holds a professorship at University College London’s Division of Surgery and Interventional Science. His clinical interests include uro-oncology, with particular expertise in kidney cancer, upper urinary tract cancer and testicular cancer.
Professor Bex chairs the European Association of Urology Renal Cancer Guideline Panel and is a former Chair of the Genitourinary Group of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer. His research focuses on advanced renal cell carcinoma and the integration of systemic therapies with surgery. He was Principal Investigator of the EORTC 30073 SURTIME trial and has led neoadjuvant studies involving immune checkpoint inhibitor combinations. He is also involved in translational research into mechanisms of immune response and resistance, in collaboration with the Netherlands Cancer Institute and the Francis Crick Institute. Professor Bex has served on the steering committees of several international phase III adjuvant trials in high-risk renal cell carcinoma and is a founding member of the International Neoadjuvant Kidney Cancer Consortium.
