FY2025 HMDP Visiting Expert Dr Rita Shane_Medication Safety Quality for Value-Driven Care Programme

Dr Rita Shane is the Ministry’s HMDP Visiting Expert in Medication Safety & Quality for Value-Driven Care. The HMDP Programme is scheduled for 19 to 27 January 2026.
Rita Shane, Pharm.D., FASHP, FCSHP is Vice President, Chief Pharmacy Officer and Professor of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles and Associate Dean, Clinical Pharmacy Services, UCSF School of Pharmacy. Dr. Shane’s areas of interest are quality and safety, transitions of care, financial stewardship of high-cost medications, and interdisciplinary collaborations to optimise patient care. She is active in advocacy efforts at the state and national levels and has worked extensively with regulatory agencies to improve patient safety. She collaborated with the legislature and California State Board of Pharmacy, respectively, to pass 2 laws that require pharmacists to ensure the accuracy of medication lists for high-risk patients on admission and discharge. California is the only state to have these requirements.
Over the years, Dr. Shane has been recognised for her passion for pharmacy and medication safety advocacy and has received numerous accolades in recognition of her contributions. These include the Harvey A.K. Whitney Award, the highest award in health-systems, John W. Webb Lecture Award for excellence in pharmacy management and leadership, ASHP Leadership Award and the 2019 Institute for Safe Medication Practices Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in medication safety and advocacy. She has been recognised as an expert in patient safety and leadership by Becker Hospital Review on multiple occasions.
Dr. Shane’s passion related to medication safety during transitions of care is a topic she has presented and written about for over 12 years, and with her experience, Dr. Shane is well-placed to share her knowledge and skills in these areas.
