FY2025 HMDP VISITING EXPERT IN PULMONARY REHABILITATION: PROF ANNE E HOLLAND

Professor Anne Holland is an internationally recognised leader in pulmonary rehabilitation and respiratory physiotherapy, renowned for her groundbreaking contributions to the management of chronic lung disease. As Professor of Physiotherapy and Head of Respiratory Research at Monash University and Alfred Health in Melbourne, she has built an extensive programme of research that has shaped global guidelines and advanced evidence-based practice. Professor Holland is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow, focusing on supportive, non-pharmacological therapies for chronic respiratory diseases—especially COPD and pulmonary fibrosis—with particular emphasis on accessible models of pulmonary rehabilitation to improve uptake and equity of care. She has published over 450 peer-reviewed journal articles, which have garnered more than 36,000 citations worldwide, and her research has informed over 30 clinical guidelines across 18 countries.

 Professor Holland has led or contributed to several influential initiatives, including international taskforces on pulmonary rehabilitation standards and the development of accessible rehabilitation models for low-resource settings. She currently leads a multinational trial of ambulatory oxygen for people with fibrotic lung disease and serves as Chief Investigator for two NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence. For her outstanding contributions, she has been awarded the Society Medal from the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (2021) and the European Respiratory Society Gold Medal for Allied Health Professionals (2022). As a visiting expert, she brings a wealth of knowledge, practical insight, and a deep commitment to advancing rehabilitation science, mentoring emerging clinicians and researchers, and improving the lives of people with chronic respiratory disease.
