Visiting Expert in Usage of AI in multimorbidity
Dr Bruce Guthrie is the Ministry of Health’s HMDP Visiting Expert in Usage of AI in Multimorbidity. His HMDP Programme is scheduled for 22 July 2024 to 26 July 2024.
About the visit/HDMP expert
Bruce Guthrie is Professor of General Practice at the University of Edinburgh UK, and the Director of the Advanced Care Research Centre (www.edin.care). He was previously Professor of Primary Care Medicine at University of Dundee UK, and before that held a number of fellowships including from the Medical Research Council and a Harkness Fellowship in Health Policy at University of California San Francisco.
He is a mixed methods health services researcher with an interest in multimorbidity and polypharmacy, and leads several interdisciplinary research projects using epidemiological and AI methods applied to large routine datasets; examining applicability of evidence in older people and those with multimorbidity; and developing and evaluating complex interventions to improve patient outcomes in people with multimorbidity and polypharmacy. This includes work to develop, implement and evaluate data-driven complex interventions to improve prescribing quality and safety, and leadership of the UK National Institute for Health and Care Research AIM-CISC programme which is researching the application of Artificial Intelligence methods to understand and improve care for people with multimorbidity (https://www.ed.ac.uk/usher/aim-cisc).
As well as conducting research, he continues to practice clinically as a GP and was the NHS Scotland Primary Care Research Champion 2014-2021, leading the Scottish Primary Care Research Network. To ensure implementation of research, and to support improvement, he has served on number of NHS advisory bodies, including chairing the guideline development group for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline “Multimorbidity: Clinical Assessment and Management”, membership of the NICE Quality and Outcomes Indicator Committee choosing the focus of UK pay for performance, and being a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies Social Care Workgroup during the COVID-19 pandemic.
