Visiting Expert in Physiotherapy in tracheostomy management
Amanda Jane Thomas is the Ministry of Health’s HMDP Visiting Expert in Physiotherapy in Tracheostomy Management. Her HMDP Programme is scheduled for 17 February 2025 to 21 February 2025.
About the visit/HDMP expert
Ms Amanda Jane Thomas is a renowned expert in tracheostomy care management. She served as the Physiotherapy Advisor to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), and the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) investigation into Tracheostomy Care in the United Kingdom (UK). Ms Thomas has recently served as an advanced and consultant level advisor for the Health Education England and Intensive Care Society Critical Care Competency Framework for Allied Health Professionals.
Ms Thomas has authored and co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications, six book chapters and greater than 40 presentations and poster abstracts at national and international conferences. She continues to pursue a wide cardiorespiratory physiotherapy research base as both a primary investigator and MSc research supervisor in her role as an Advanced Clinical Physiotherapist embedded in a Critical Care Outreach service.
She is also the creator and principal lecturer of "Exploring Exercise", a programme that has delivered over 80 workshops and professional development courses across the UK, Republic of Ireland and China, focusing on exercise physiology in acute care, exercise interventions in critical care, tracheostomy management, and high-fidelity simulation. Additionally, she serves as a guest lecturer for various postgraduate cardiorespiratory physiotherapy programmes in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and Australia.
She has influenced cardiorespiratory physiotherapy practice internationally as the inaugural Vice President of the International Confederation of Cardio-respiratory Physical Therapists (ICCrPT), an official subgroup of World Physiotherapy.
