Visiting Expert in Geriatic Emergency Medicine
Professor Christian Hans Nickel is the Ministry of Health’s HMDP Visiting Expert in Geriatric Emergency Medicine. His HMDP Programme is scheduled for 22 February 2025 to 28 February 2025.
About the visit/HDMP expert
Professor Christian Nickel is known for his passion and special interest in improving care for older patients attending the emergency department.
He was Chair of the Section of Geriatric Emergency Medicine of EUSEM for 5 years and an editorial board member for the European Journal of Emergency Medicine.
He has a keen interest in education and his achievements include participation in the curriculum commission for teaching of emergency medicine and development of a longitudinal curriculum in emergency medicine to Masters level.
Along with an interprofessional team including nursing, physiotherapy, as well as social services, the ED of the University Hospital Basel achieved gold level status Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) in June 2024 from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP); the ED of the UHBS is the first centre outside the United States to receive this award. This program was established to acknowledge emergency departments that deliver excellent care to older adults.
