Visiting Expert in trauma informed practice
Dr Salam Soliman is the Ministry's HMDP Visiting Expert in Paediatrics, Women's Mental Health, Psychology and Psychosocial Trauma Services. Her HMDP Programme is scheduled for 16 Oct - 27 Oct 2023.
About the visit/HMDP expert
Dr. Soliman is the Director of the Center of Prevention and Early Trauma Treatment at Child First. In that role, she oversees a Category II National Child Traumatic Stress Network Center which include replication of the Child First model, developing and delivering evidence-based trainings and consultation services to communities across the US and helping create systems that work to support families and young children. Prior to that, she had been the Connecticut State Clinical Director and National Clinical Advisor for Child First.
She came to this position after having trained and worked internationally in hospitals, including the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Canada, Behman Hospital in the Middle East, the Royal Ottawa Hospital, the Ottawa Courthouse, public schools, universities, and outpatient clinics. Her work primarily focuses on children, with a particular interest in disrupted attachments, the long-term effects of trauma on children, the impact of racism and inequities on young children, families and providers and the benefits of reflective supervision.
Dr. Soliman is a licensed clinical psychologist and has been working in the field since 1996. After immigrating from Egypt to Montreal, she obtained her Bachelor’s in Psychology from McGill University and went on to get a Master’s in Education from the University of Ottawa. She has also completed master’s level coursework in the area of Forensic and Experimental Psychology at Carleton University. Dr. Soliman received a second Master’s in Science with a focus on Educational Psychology in 2004 and went on to receive a dual doctorate in Clinical and School Psychology in 2006 from Pace University. Dr. Soliman served as an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Pace University and later as the Director for Counseling Services for New York University in Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Soliman is a licensed clinical psychologist in New York and Connecticut, a certified school psychologist in Connecticut and is nationally endorsed as an infant mental health expert.
Dr. Soliman is a seasoned consultant and speaker with many years of experience providing support in the infant mental health field. This includes a leadership role with the Reflective Supervision Collaborative. Additionally, Dr. Soliman provides consultation services to many organizations including the Louisiana State University, the Alliance for Infant Mental Health, Zero to Three, Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV), Child Heath Development Institute, the New York Association for Infant Mental Health and KKH Hospital in Singapore among others. She is a Board Member for APA Division 39, Section II where she has served as Secretary for the past six years. She presents frequently at national and international conferences covering a variety of topics including infant mental health, child welfare, supervision, mindfulness, and attachment-based interventions and the intersectionality of issues of diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion within the field.
