Dr Mark R. Schmeler and Ms Kendra Betz is the Ministry's HMDP Visiting Expert in Systems Redesign for the prescription of assistive technology. Their HMDP Programme is scheduled for 18 May - 24 May 2023.

Dr Mark R. Schmeler
Associate Professor
University of Pittsburgh
Mark Schmeler is an Associate Professor and the Vice Chair for Education & Training in
the Department of Rehabilitation Science & Technology at the University of Pittsburgh.
He is also the co-director of the International Seating Symposium. He is an Occupational
Therapist and Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) serving as the Director of the
Center for Assistive Technology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
His research is in the area large data analytics to inform practice and policy related to
wheelchair mobility and related assistive technologies. Other research interests include
the application of outcome measures, telehealth, service delivery, product development,
and product testing.
He also works closely with local, national, and international organizations as an
advocate for appropriate access to assistive technology devices and services. He served on the RESNA Board of Directors and is a RESNA Fellow.
Ms Kendra Betz
Senior Guest Lecturer
University of Pittsburgh
Kendra Betz is a Physical Therapist and Assistive Technology Professional credentialed by the Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology Society of North America. She has enjoyed an accomplished 30-year career with the Veterans Health Administration in the United States. Kendra’s areas of clinical specialization include Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) rehabilitation, assistive technology, adaptive sports, and patient safety. Kendra holds an adjunct faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh, Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology, and teaches regularly at national and international forums.
Her expertise and contributions are recognized by induction into the National SCI Association Hall of Fame, the Air Force Association’s Employee of the Year Award, and the Clinical Excellence Award and Therapy Leadership Council Distinguished Lecture Award from the Academy of SCI Professionals.
