Visiting Expert in rheumatology/gout
Prof Nicola Dalbeth is the Ministry's HMDP Visiting Expert in Rheumatology/Gout. Her HMDP Programme is scheduled for 11 Sep - 15 Sep 2023.
About the visit/HMDP expert
Professor Nicola Dalbeth is a world-renowned expert in the field of gout. She leads a clinical, laboratory and research programme in gout, focusing on understanding the mechanisms, impact and treatment of gout. She holds dual appointments as a full professor at the University of Auckland and as a consultant for the Auckland District Health Board. She is the Head of Department of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Medicine, at the University of Auckland.
She was chair of The Health and Safety Commission’s expert advisory group on gout in 2016. She is a principal investigator in the Auckland Bone and Joint Research Group. She is also an associate investigator at the Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery. In 2019, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and in 2021, she won the top research award of the medical faculty of the Univervisty of Auckland, the Gluckman Medal, for distinguished contribution to research on gout.
She has served as a member of the Core Leadership Team on the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Gout Management Guidelines, and as steering committee member for the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) gout group and the ACR/EULAR gout classification project. She is co-chair of the Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) Working Group (OMERACT). She is a proponent of nurse-led interventions in management of gout based on her research into the factors affecting the adherence of gout treatment. She is also proponent on the use of impactful images in patient education conveying relevant and useful information about gout and its management.
