Visiting Expert in palliative medicine
Professor Xavier Gomez-Batiste is the Ministry's HMDP Visiting Expert in Palliative Medicine. His HMDP Programme is scheduled for 3 July - 13 July 2023.
About the visit/HMDP expert
Professor Xavier Gómez-Batiste is the Director of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and University of Vic (UVIC) Master of Palliative Care since 1999 and Chair of Palliative Care since 2011 at the University of Vic in Barcelona. He is also the scientific director of the La Caxia Program for the psychosocial care of advanced patients and their families since 2008. Prior to 2020, From 2007 to 2020, he had also served as the Director of the ‘Qualy’ Observatory and World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Palliative Care Public Health Programmes (WHOCC-ICO) for 14 years and was a Medical Officer for Palliative and Long-Term Care at WHO Headquarters (Geneva) from 2014 to 2015. To date, he has published 6 books and more than 150 articles. His main areas of interest are in the implementation and evaluation of health services, pregraduate training, quality, education and research in nursing homes as well as the early identification and prognostication of those with palliative care needs.
