Visiting Expert in Paediatric neurological upper limb rehabilitation
Brian John Hoare is the Ministry of Health’s HMDP Visiting Expert in Paediatric Neurological Upper Limb Rehabilitation. His HMDP Programme is scheduled for 4 March 2024 to 8 March 2024.
About the visit/HDMP expert
Brian Hoare is a paediatric occupational therapist with over 20 years of clinical and research experience in the management of children with cerebral palsy. He currently holds an Associate Professor position within the School of Occupational Therapy, La Trobe University and adjunct Senior Research Fellowship position within the Department of Paediatrics, Monash University. Brian completed his PhD at LaTrobe University, Melbourne in 2010 which focused on the treatment of young children with hemiplegia cerebral palsy. He also undertook an invite post-doctoral position at Karolinska Institute, Sweden in 2012.
As a clinician, Brian provides family-centered, highly specialised interventions. He has established clinical protocols for therapy following interventions such as Botulinum toxin-A; played a pivotal role in the clinical implementation of modified constraint-induced movement therapy in Australia; and described the theoretical framework and clinical implementation of bimanual occupational therapy. Brian’s research findings have been disseminated widely through publications in high quality, peer reviewed journals. These papers, along with two Cochrane reviews, provide the highest-level of evidence supporting upper limb therapy for children with cerebral palsy. Brian’s work has contributed significantly to establishing clinical best-practice both in Australia and internationally, and established him as an OT expert in the field of paediatric cerebral palsy. His expertise is evident in publications and his frequent invitations to provide education about upper limb interventions.
Brian is currently the Director of the Cerebral Palsy Group which incorporates CPTherapy, Australia’s largest cerebral palsy private practice, and CPTeaching which provides high-quality education that focuses on the translation of research findings into clinical practice.
