Visiting Expert in Integrated care for chronic conditions
Sandra Billinger is the Ministry of Health’s HMDP Visiting Expert in Integrated Care for Chronic Conditions. Her HMDP Programme is scheduled for 18 March 2024 to 22 March 2024.
About the visit/HDMP expert
Professor Billinger is a world-renown expert in exercise, brain health, and stroke recovery. Her work has been continuously funded through the National Institutes of Health since 2011 and has also received funding from the American Heart Association and the American Physical Therapy Association.
She has published extensively and has delivered hundreds of lectures and courses nationally and internationally. At KU Medical Center, Billinger serves as Vice Chair, Stroke Translational Research, in the Department of Neurology, Assistant Director, Neuroimaging Core, KU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (KU ADRC) and is co-director of the Brain Health Training Program, KU ADRC.
Dr. Billinger has an active research laboratory and is director of the Research in Exercise and Cardiovascular Health (REACH) laboratory and leads two multi-site NIH-funded trials. Her research initiatives have resulted in the following discoveries: 1) development of maximal and submaximal exercise testing protocols on a recumbent stepper, 2) a novel method for assessing brain blood flow response during exercise, and 3) a patent application. She also has a joint appointment in the School of Medicine departments of Cell Biology and Physiology, , and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Billinger was awarded the AHA Stroke Council Lecture Award in 2016, Stata Norton Award for Teaching Excellence (2016), Excellence in Neurologic Research from the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy, American Physical Therapy Association (2021) and the Kansas City Central Exchange STEMMy Educator Award in 2021.
She was recognized by the World Stroke Organization Board of Directors in 2022 as one of the outstanding women who have made important and significant contributions to the field of stroke and brain health around the world.
