Dr Catherine Forde and Dr Deborah Lynch are the Ministry of Health’s HMDP Visiting Experts in Empowering communities for health: The dynamic role of community development in Singapore. Their HMDP Programme is scheduled for 14 to 22 November 2023.

Dr Catherine Forde
Dr Catherine Forde is a senior lecturer in youth and community work, research associate of the Institute for Social Science in the Twenty-First Century (ISS21) and programme director of the BSocSc (Youth and Community Work) at University College Cork. Catherine co-developed and delivered twin modules on environment and sustainability on qualifying social work and youth and community work degree programmes at the School of Applied Social Studies, UCC. Catherine's primary research and publication interests are in community development, eco-social work and environmental education, state-civil society relations, and children and young people's participation.
She has published widely on these themes and is co-author of the book Social Work and Community Development: A Critical Practice Perspective (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015) and lead editor of the forthcoming book Teaching and Learning in Ecosocial Work: Theory, Concepts and Methods (Springer Nature, 2024). She is co-editor of the themed section Community Development in Social Work Education: Themes for a Changing World (Community Development Journal, October 2021) and lead editor for a forthcoming special issue on the ethics of youth work practice (Ethics and Social Welfare, 2024). A highly experienced researcher, Catherine has worked as a PI and Co-I on many funded research projects and is a co-investigator and Ireland PI on the Horizon Europe project Intersectional Spaces of Participation: Inclusive, Resilient, Embedded (INSPIRE) (2024-2027) Catherine is the leader of the Research for Civil Society, Environment and Social Action (REACT) cluster of ISS21. She serves on the editorial board of the journal Ethics and Social Welfare and is a book review editor for the journal. Dr Deborah Lynch
Dr Deborah Lynch is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work at The University of Queensland in Australia. Deborah has received a University of Queensland (UQ) Teaching and Learning Award. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), an accreditation of the UK Professional Standards Framework. Deborah has published widely on systems, policies and practices in health, education and justice that impact children, young people, families, and communities.
Through her international collaborations in social work and community development, Deborah contributes to interdisciplinary scholarship in collaborative projects and journal publications, including the Community Development Journal, Australian Social Work, European Journal of Social Work, The British Journal of Social Work and Ethics and Social Welfare. She co-authored Social Work and Community Development: A Critical Practice Perspective (2015; Palgrave McMillan) with Dr Catherine Forde at University College Cork in Ireland. Her areas of interest are community development, health equity disrupting education patterns and social disadvantage, the ecosocial transition and sustainable development.
