Visiting Expert in Clinical 3D design and printing
Jonathan Morris is the Ministry of Health’s HMDP Visiting Expert in Clinical 3D Design and Printing. His HMDP Programme is scheduled for 26 February 2024 to 1 March 2024.
About the visit/HDMP expert
Professor Jonathan Morris is a Board-Certified Radiologist and Neuroradiologist at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. He is a Professor in the Departments of Radiology, Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, and Anatomy. He received his M.D. at Howard University College of Medicine, completed an internship at Washington Hospital Center, a NINDS and NLM research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, as well as radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowships at the Mayo Clinic. He is the Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic 3D Printing Anatomical Modelling Unit (AMU), the Medical Director of Biomedical and Scientific Visualisation, the Executive Medical Director of Immersive and Experiential Learning, and the Director of Minimally Invasive Thermal Ablation of Spine Tumours at The Mayo Clinic.
In his role as founder and Medical Director of the 3D Anatomical Modelling Unit Professor Morris has established the field of clinical 3D printing at Point-of-Care, within Mayo Clinic over the last 18 years, helped build national infrastructure in the USA, and is an internationally recognised expert in this domain.
He is a cofounder and past president of the Radiology Society of North America 3D-SIG, editor of 3D Printing in Medicine, Director of multiple CME courses for 3D printing in medicine, and over the last 10 years aided in the building regulatory and radiology IT infrastructure for point of care manufacturing.
The 3D AMU designs and produces patient-specific anatomical models, sterilizable patient specific osteotomy guides, class I and II medical devices, and implants from medical imaging. The AMU is a centralized manufacturing facility in the hospital above the operating rooms servicing multiple fields including ENT, OMFS, Orthopaedic, Neurosurgery, Oncological, Cardiothoracic, Paediatric surgery and Prosthetics and Orthotics, in-house, by an integrated team of radiographers, clinicians, surgeons, health care technology management, and engineers. These achieve for patient’s operative time and cost savings, treatment accuracy as well as supply chain resiliency.
In his role as Medical Director of Biomedical Visualisation and Experiential Learning, Professor Morris co-leads a team of 18 medical illustrators and animators. This department is a centralised service for clinicians, patient educators and researchers at the Mayo Clinic who require the services of medical illustrators. This department together with the AMU also additionally drives the development and deployment of extended reality programs at the Mayo Clinic.
In his role as Executive medical director of immersive and experiential learning, he has focused on enterprise scaling of extended reality applications, as well as on access, equity and inclusion within extended reality. Dr Morris is also leading the building of Mayo Clinic’s central infrastructure for XR technologies for clinical needs such as intraoperative augmented reality navigation, as well as the educational needs including graduate medical education, allied health, medical school, and continuing professional development.
Since 2006 Prof. Morris practices actively in Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology, with a special interest in minimally invasive thermal ablation of tumours of the neuroaxis, having earlier established the Mayo Clinic minimally invasive oncologic spine service. In the last 17 years he has led and scaled minimally invasive tumor ablation of the spine, sacrum and musculoskeletal system.
Prof. Morris has published over 270 articles in the peer-reviewed literature, several books, and Book Chapters, and is considered an international expert, with over 300 national and international presentations.
