Visiting Expert in advanced internal medicine
Prof Derek Bell is the Ministry's HMDP Visiting Expert in Advanced Internal Medicine. His HMDP Programme is scheduled for 2 to 6 October 2023.
About the visit/HMDP expert
Prof Derek Bell’s current role is Chair to the Board for both North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and South Tees Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
He is a physician by background with 40 years’ experience in the NHS including service design and delivery as well as research and education, and his remit has included working as an external advisor to Government in England, Scotland and Ireland as well as internationally.
Prof Bell has also led a number of initiatives including the development of a new medical specialty (Acute Medicine) and the development of a nationally adopted clinical scoring system to assess acutely unwell patients.
He has over 220 peer reviewed publications and research grant awards exceeded £22m over the last 15 years.
Most recently, he was awarded an OBE and was the past President of the Royal College of Physicians.
